Is there a point

To this blog if I hardly ever write? I want to write prolificly--if I am an author in my head does that count? I am reminded of my brother's cheer from City Year--"To be enthusiastic you must act enthusiastic!" To be a writer I must act like a writer! So I will write more, in my journals, on this blog, on my recipe cards, at work, in magazine margins until something gels...

I do have a story idea based on a random conversation with my mom. She was telling me about a man who lives between Scio and Wellsville who threatened to shoot down any hot air balloons if they floated over his property during the great Wellsville Balloon Rally.
This same man has written various diatribes against the government on plywood boards and had his cows taken away because they were starving to death.

So maybe a story about an organic farming cult. Maybe I'll have chapter one sometime in August

Eye doctors

Just got back from the eye doctor.

I hate when they shoot that puff of air in your eye--that could be some sort of creative torture I swear.

Bibliophile

I've read a ton the past couple of days since I've been on vacation and waiting in airport lounges. Read a really trashy Judy Bloom novel, a historical fiction account of the 2nd Punic war in honor of our upcoming trip to Tunisisa, and a bunch of magazines like "US" and People. The reason I love reading so much is that good writers can make a character and the reader so intimate--I can examine and dissect their emotions and actions and learn from them in ways I can't from a real person.

My favorite books are ones that after I finish reading them I feel like I've grown in some intangible way--I've understood a new emotional nuance in human behavior, or found a deficiany in myself that I can remedy, or gained some new insight into the human experience. I'd like to write a book myself someday... It's all about capturing those thoughts and experiences that are the essence of life and putting them down on paper. A very hard task indeed.
