I've read a ton the past couple of days since I've been on vacation and waiting in airport lounges. Read a really trashy Judy Bloom novel, a historical fiction account of the 2nd Punic war in honor of our upcoming trip to Tunisisa, and a bunch of magazines like "US" and People. The reason I love reading so much is that good writers can make a character and the reader so intimate--I can examine and dissect their emotions and actions and learn from them in ways I can't from a real person.
My favorite books are ones that after I finish reading them I feel like I've grown in some intangible way--I've understood a new emotional nuance in human behavior, or found a deficiany in myself that I can remedy, or gained some new insight into the human experience. I'd like to write a book myself someday... It's all about capturing those thoughts and experiences that are the essence of life and putting them down on paper. A very hard task indeed.
